I stayed at a mate's house last night, and this morning as I was on my way home, I realised I didn't have my rings on... Now I knew I was wearing them the night before and I wasn't that drunk, so I panicked a bit and then figured I must have left them at my mate's house. I texted said mate to let them know, and asked them to hang onto the rings until the next time we met. About 20 minutes later, as I was nearing home, I got my purse out to buy a packet of gum and guess what I found inside? That's right, those damn rings. So I had to text my mate again explaining my foolishness... Now, if I had just left the rings in an obvious place (like on my fingers), then I wouldn't have had that momentary panic this morning that I'd lost them. Ok, you may think that it was a bit much that I panicked at all over a couple of rings but I rarely buy jewellery, so all my rings are gifts that have great sentimental value. Anyway, I digress. The point is, all of this 'thinking-I'd-lost-my-rings-and-then-realising-I'm-an-idiot' could have been avoided if I hadn't elected to put them in a 'Safe Place.'

And it's not just me. Later today I was talking to a different mate on the phone and he was busy doing something on the PC but still wanted to chat. 'Hold on,' he said, 'I'll just get my handfree... So I held on and he banged about a bit before coming back to the phone. 'Sorry Rach, I'll have it in a minute,' then a bit more banging about and much cursing ensued... 'Oh for f***'s sake,' I heard before he came back to the phone. 'No, I can't find it.' So I asked him when he had it last and he said he wasn't sure 'but,' he said, 'I remember I put it in a Safe Place... You know, so I wouldn't lose it.'

The thing is, people all over the world (well all over London anyway, if my somewhat limited 'market research' can be taken to be representative) are putting things in 'Safe Places,' not realising that putting something in a 'Safe Place' so as not to lose it is actually a sure-fire way of guaranteeing you won't see it for at least the foreseeable. I remember a good few years back, just before I was due to relocate to France for a year; I asked my Ma for my birth certificate (this was the first time I had had any need for it) and she said that she would get it, but a few hours (and again, much cursing) later, she told me should couldn't find it... Where did she put it? I asked her. Yep, you've guessed it 'In a Safe Place.' We managed to get a copy and all was well, but that is just one of many examples of the danger of putting something valuable in a 'Safe Place.'

Don't get me wrong, sometimes you can find things after having hidden them away in some 'Safe Place,' but it requires that you totally forget about it. Now I mean totally forget about it, for as long as it's in the back of your mind that you still want/need it, it will remain elusive... If, however, you write it off as being lost or somewhere else (like with my rings), then it will turn up within a day or two (or an hour or two if you're lucky) later in some totally ridiculous place that you at the time deemed to be 'Safe,' like the time I found my mobile in the breadbin (don't ask).

So do I take this as a lesson learned? Well you'd have thought so, but as soon as I've finished typing this up, I'm going to go back to my search for my passport (I need the number for something) which of course, I left in some 'Safe Place...'
